Course of Study

  1. The course of study leading towards the Bachelor of Science Speech, Language & Hearing degree shall be 3 years and 1 year internship.

  2. The academic years will be divided into two semesters (6 month duration each) with a total of 6 semesters in 3 years. There will be university examinations after each semester.

  1. SUBJECTS OF STUDY

  2. The subjects taught shall be those shown in the scheme of examination which is duly approved by the University.

    These subjects shall be as shown in the scheme of examinations for each year. The number of hours included in the time table for each paper shall be in accordance with the scheme of examination.

    The subjects shall be grouped under major subjects (Group I, II & III), allied subjects (Group IV), basic subjects (Group V) and applied subjects (Group VI)

    Group I Speech Language Pathology
    Group II Audiology
    Group III Clinical Psychology
    Group IV Allied subjects
    Linguistics, Phonetics & Phonology, Otolaryngology, Neurology and Paediatrics 
    Group V Basic subjects
    Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology & Language Electronics & Acoustics
    Group V I Applied Subjects
    Aphasiology, Child language disorders (including learning disability and pervasive developmental disorders), Applied Cognitive Neurology (dementia's, degenerative and cerebellar disorders) and neuroimaging studies, Neurolinguistics, Artificial intelligence and computer application in speech, language pathology.

  3. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION: shall be English
    The examinations, tests, assignments and viva shall be in English.


  4. TEACHING HOURS
    The number of hours allotted in the time table shall correspond to those shown in the scheme of examination against each paper.

    Note:1 Since the syllabus is prepared for each paper keeping in view that the course extends over one academic year and the number of hours available during the week are limited, it shall be ensured that there will be only minimum disturbance in the training schedule.

    Note 2: The period of educational tours, camps, guest lectures shall not exceed 5% of the total number of weeks available, during the academic year.

  5. ATTENDANCE
    Attendance, both for theoretical and practical training is compulsory for all students. 

    No students shall be permitted to take the university examination, unless he/she has put in a minimum of 75% attendance in all theory classes and 80% in clinical practical in each section/department in each semester as per the University of Calicut rules governing attendance.

    The students who do not satisfy the attendance requirements shall repeat the entire course of that semester.

    Medical leave will be granted if a medical certificate is obtained from a doctor working in the Government hospital/institution.

    Maternity leave of 3 months will be granted for eligible candidates upon production of the due certificate from a doctor working in a Government Hospital/Institution.

  6. EVALUATION
    Examination results shall be based on the marks obtained in the University examination and the Internal Assessment.

  7. EXAMINATION

    1. There shall be two written examinations in each academic year after each semester. The examinations will be conducted by University of Calicut.

    2. The examinations shall be of the duration of 3 hours 

    3. To be eligible for applying for the annual examination, a candidate must meet the requirements under CLINICAL PRACTICUM.

    Note: Prior to applying for University examination, the candidate shall obtain a certificate regarding his/her conduct from the Head of the Institution. Applying and appearing for the annual examination is compulsory except when a candidate does not fulfill the requirements specified and/or on medical grounds. Those students who have valid grounds for the annual examination shall be permitted to take a make-up examination for the papers in which the candidate was absent. 

    Minimum pass marks in the examinations shall not be less than 45% for each subject.

  8. INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
    Marks shall also be allocated based on tests, assignments, presentations and activities of similar nature conducted in the course of an academic year. The total marks allotted for internal assessment shall be 10% of the maximum marks for a given paper in the annual examination.

  9. CLINICAL PRACTICUM
    (a)
    The marks for the clinical or practical examination for each semester shall be based on the performance during clinical postings and viva-voce conducted in the department at the end of each semester.

    (b)
    The student shall get a minimum of 45% in each group to successfully complete the clinical practicum. Those who do not complete the clinical practicum successfully shall not be permitted to appear for the semester examinations

  10. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES AT THE END OF THE COURSE 
    The successful candidates shall be grouped as under:

    Distinction:
    Those who obtain not less than 75% of the aggregate marks in the course

    First Class:
    Those who obtain less than 75% but not less than 65% of the aggregate marks in the course.

    Pass:
    Those who obtain not less than 50% of the aggregate marks in the course.

    The declaration of first class or distinction will be made on the basis of combined aggregate marks obtained in all the subjects, of the annual examination of first, second and third year; provided the candidate has no failure(s) in any of the examinations..

    Note :
    (a) The marks obtained in the internal assessment shall also be taken into account to arrive at the aggregate marks for each subject.

    (b) In the marks list of candidates who have not taken the examination due to any reason, the word 'Absent' against the paper/s may be used instead of 'To repeat' to avoid giving erroneous picture that the candidate did not pass in an earlier attempt.

    (c) Reevaluation - A candidate can apply for reevaluation within 30 days from the date of declaration of the examination results on payment of the fee laid down by the of University of Calicut.

    (d) A candidate shall be permitted to reject the result of the whole examination of any year within 30 days after the publication of the results. This rejection shall be exercised only once and the rejection once exercised cannot be revoked.

    (e) An appplication for rejection shall be accompanied by the prescribed.

  11. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO THE NEXT HIGHER CLASS
    A candidate who has not successfully completed any papers will not be permitted to go to the next higher class.

    He/She shall clear the paper/s within three consecutive attempts, including the supplementary examinations conducted by the University.

    A candidate failing in clinical practicum shall not be admitted to the next higher class. He shall repeat the entire clinical practicum until he passes.

    Note:
    For all examination related issues, the controller of examination of the University of Calicut shall be the component and deciding authority.
